One of my pet peeves about sushi restaurants in Victoria is this whole “closed between lunch and dinner” thing.
Recently I found a welcome change from that at Shiki Sushi.
Here you can show up any time after Shiki Sushi opens (either 11 am or 12 noon) and you won’t be turned away.
Yaay, no more denying my mid-afternoon sushi cravings!
Arriving late in the afternoon on a Friday, Mark and I had most of the place to ourselves. This was a good thing for a few reasons.
First of all, we scored one of their big comfy booths which gave us a bit more privacy for doing all of our picture taking and videoing.
Second, we arrived right in the middle of Shiki Sushi’s Happy Hour which goes from 3-6 and our server that night was giving me some nice big pours on my wine…
And finally, being that it wasn’t overly busy, the sushi chefs were pumping out our dishes as fast as we could order them!
Prior to coming to Shiki Sushi I had checked out their menu online and had seen many neat sounding items that I thought I’d like to try…
Dishes like the “Dancing Eel”, “Sushi Pizza” and the “Crazy Monkey Roll” all got me intrigued.
What they didn’t say on their online menu was that not only do they have tons of cool sounding dishes to try, but they also have an All You Can Eat menu!!
Yes, for only 28 bucks you can stuff yourself silly with as many items off their special menu, providing you keep to their 2 hour time limit.
This made our decision very easy as both Mark and I were keen to try as many dishes as we could, including the Shiki Sushi Pizza which fortunately was on the All You Can eat menu.
This was my first time ever doing the all you can eat thing at a sushi place and let me tell you, it won’t be my last.
Having been a little shy to order what I call “adventurous dishes” from sushi restaurants in the past, I loved being able to sample some new and unfamiliar dishes like “Unagi No Kabayaki”.
In case you’ve never had it before, Unagi is grilled eel and Kabayaki is a sweet soy sauce that they serve on top of the eel.
Unagi doesn’t really have much taste to it, though it smelt a bit “”fishy”. It actually wasn’t nearly as scary to eat as I thought it might be.
My favourite dishes of the night were the Prawn Tempura and the Sushi Pizza.
The pizza (which we ordered with tuna but can also be ordered with salmon) was very unique and I loved it!
I was also happy to try some of my usual favourites like “Tuna Tataki”, “California and Dynamite Rolls”, “Prawn Tempura” and various types of “Nigiri”.
As a whole, the sushi we ate tasted quite fresh and was of good quality. The only dish I had that was a little less fresh than I’ve had at other sushi places was the salmon Nigiri. Unlike the tuna which melted in my mouth, the salmon was a bit chewy.
Our sevice at Shiki Sushi was pleasant and speedy and we were appreciative that our server was very happy to explain what any dish was that we were curious about trying.
After several hours of sushi feasting and lounging at Shiki Sushi, Mark and I both left very satisfied and agreed we’d be back again… once our stretched bellies had returned to their original size….
