** PRIME IS NOW CLOSED **
Recently I had the opportunity of dining out at one of Victoria’s up and coming restaurants.
Named as one of Canada’s Best New Restaurant in 2010, Prime Steakhouse & Lounge certainly lives up to its growing reputation as being one of Victoria’s best steakhouses.
Located just off the lobby of the Magnolia Hotel and Spa, this restaurant is ideally situated in the heart of downtown Victoria.
I decided to treat my friend Shelley for dinner as we are both huge steak fans. She also likes red wine like I do so we started our night off with a few glasses in the lounge.
They have a nice little lounge with a resident bull (see picture to understand what I mean) where you can sit and relax with a pre-dinner drink or two. I often like doing that to make my night last longer.
Next to the lounge is a bar that you can also enjoy pre or post dinner drinks as well.
You can of course choose to eat you meal there too, however Shelley and I preferred the cozy booth we ate at instead.
With a couple glasses of wine in us, we decided to order our starters. Both of us went with the “Caesar Salad” ($9).
We both enjoyed our salads and since I happen to prefer Caesar salads that have more garlic than lemon taste to them, I would definitely order this again.
After taking a look at the menu and conferring with our very friendly and knowledgeable server “Ellie”, Shelley and I both decided that on our first visit to Prime, we had to get steak.
Though there are other selections on the menu including some delightful sounding seafood, this is a steakhouse after all, so we really wanted to try their best dishes first.
With six different cuts to choose from, I decided on my favourite that I usually get when I go to a steakhouse, the “New York” ($24 8oz, $29 10 oz, $38 14 oz).
I ordered my steak with the brandy peppercorn cream sauce ($4 extra) on the side, and Shelley got hers with the demi glaze ($3 extra).
The steaks came with a choice of potato (either mushroom risotto or garlic mashed) and vegetables.
I went with the risotto which turned out to be an excellent choice as it was delicious! Shelley loved her garlic mashed potatoes as well.
As for the steak itself, I ordered my medium rare and it was cooked perfectly (warm red center, pink throughout).
I would say that as far as the overall taste and tenderness of the steak, I would rate it as very good, but maybe not the best one I’ve ever had.
That’s not to say I wouldn’t order it again, as I really did enjoy it.
To finish off the evening, both Shelley I ordered desserts.
Though I was pretty full by this point (good size portions) I really wanted to see how their “Chocolate Molten Cake” ($12) measured up to others I have tasted around town.
Our server advised us that there would be a 15 minute wait for my dessert as they make it upon ordering.
Well let me tell you the wait was soooo worth it! There was tons of yummy warm chocolate sauce and the whole thing just melted in my mouth.
Definitely one of, if not the best chocolate molten cakes I’ve ever had!
This was my first full meal at Prime Steakhouse (I have had drinks in the lounge here before) and I have to say I was really pleased with it.
I liked the warm and cozy atmosphere and the service we had was impeccable.
If you don’t have time to stay for a meal, as I mentioned before their lounge and bar are good places to have a drink or an appetizer.
After having had its 2nd anniversary, I sincerely hope Prime is here to stay as Victoria could use some more quality steakhouses.
I will definitely be back!
