You know what I love about going out to a good ethnic restaurant? You can feel like you just went on a mini vacation without having to pack a bag or buy a plane ticket.
If you’re short on cash, and have a hankering for a Mexican vacation, Cafe Mexico could be the perfect way to satisfy your taste buds and your travel bug.
Today I had the perfect mini vacation and I only had to go as far as Store Street, in downtown Victoria.
First of all, I have to say that this restaurant really does an excellent job of transporting you to Mexico.
Once inside, you’re surrounded by bright colours, palm trees, tropical birds, Mexican memorabilia and great Latin music playing in the background.
To start my vacation off right, I asked my server for recommendations for a great drink.
As I am not a huge Margarita or Mojito fan (I know, this is too bad as they have many of these kind of great drinks to choose from, as well as 15 different types of tequila), I was told to try the “Mexican Bellini” ($6).
As an aside, though I drank my drink at my table, they have a very nicely decorated “Margarita Bar’ that looks great to sit and drink at.
My Bellini was listed on the menu as a “House Favourite” and was a mix of Jose Cuervo tequila and Southern Comfort, blended with frozen mango fruit, cranberry juice and lime.
Normally I would be a little scared of a drink that has tequila in it as I’m not a huge fan of it (although I have discovered that flavoured tequilas can’t be quite yummy…but that’s another story).
As soon as my drink arrived though, I could tell just by looking at that it had to be good!
I was right, this drink was amazing!!! It was super sweet (definitely a girly drink) and wow, I don’t think I’ve ever had a better tasting Bellini!
I’m definitely coming back on a Thursday sometime as my server told me these tasty drinks are on special for $4 on those nights.
Anyway, back to my meal! So as per usual, I asked my server for a recommendation for my main dish. She told me the “Chimichanga” ($13.59) was her favourite, and was also a popular dish. I got the chicken Chimichanga but you can also order it with beef instead if you prefer.
As I was waiting for my main course to arrive (which wasn’t very long by the way), I was asked if I wanted some chips and salsa to nibble on. I said sure (to the small portion), but again, was careful not to eat too many for fear that I might not have enough room to eat my main course.
The chips and salsa were pretty good, and for only a buck (small portion) or three bucks (large portion), it’s a quick way to get some food in your stomach if you’re starving when you get to the restaurant.

Back to the Chimichanga….It is listed in the “Favourites” section of the menu and comes with mexican rice and refried beans.
As you can tell in the picture, this restaurant does not skimp on portions! They also don’t skimp on taste as this was a very yummy dish.
For under $15, I would say the Chimichanga’s a really great deal, and you can easily share it or get another meal out of it by taking the leftovers home.
Now it’s a good thing I had the forethought to get half of my meal to go otherwise I would have been too stuffed to eat my dessert.
That’s because the dessert I ordered, the very popular “Deep Fried Ice Cream” ($6.25), ended up being a huge portion and could have easily been shared as well!
Wait, forget that, who wants to share desserts?!
As you can see in the picture, I had my ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce but you can choose caramel or honey instead if you prefer.
Personally, I think chocolate goes best with this dish, and my server agreed.
If you’re looking for a Mexican restaurant that has great food and a real Mexican feel, you have to check out Cafe Mexico.
With it’s great food and drinks, huge portions and awesome atmosphere, you really get your money’s worth here.
Instead saving up your money to get that plane ticket to Mexico, try stopping by Cafe Mexico first instead.
It really is like going on a mini Mexican vacation!
